I was able to meet with Mr. Challenger as well as the Native American who posed for the painting. J. D. Challenger is currently known to be one of the foremost painters of the West as well as one of the few artists that has been accepted by the Native Americans of the West for his authentic representation. He was a warm and intense person who looked like he just walked off the pages of an old west novel with his long hair and buckskin coat. His love for the West was clearly present in his enthusiasm for his portrait paintings****.
