Description
This is a great early red glaze example of the Sanford, NC, A.V. Smith's face jugs from circa 2000 or just post, per the collection from which it came. This type of face A.V. called his whistler face jug and he employs melted glass to add an orange drip effect off the handles & ears. The red glaze, including a green apple & yellow, he had to stop employing because they were banned due to lead content. Obviously, one doesn't eat from this, and later a red equivalent was discovered by the NC potters to basically match the old red. A.V. is now retired, endeavored now on another career path. Signed on base. Stands 12" tall.
