Item Details
Description
Samuel Curtis (British, 1779-1860). Four hand colored copper engravings, ca. 1820s. A lovely ensemble of four copper engravings of different floral species, each one embellished with beautiful hand coloring to bring out the scarlet and blushing pink hues of the blooms as well as the vibrant green leaves with delineated veining. Three of the plates depict the development of the plants from seed to blossoming stage. Each plate was created for Curtis' "The Botanical Magazine" and is set in an attractive dark green matte. Size of plate marks: 7.875" L x 4.75" W (20 cm x 12.1 cm) Size of sheets: 9.3" L x 5.75" W (23.6 cm x 14.6 cm) Size of mattes: 14.5" L x 11.25" W (36.8 cm x 28.6 cm)

In the 1820s, Samuel Curtis assumed the role of editor of "The Botanical Magazine" which was founded by his cousin and father-in-law William Curtis thirty years prior. William Curtis was a London apothecary who could not ignore his passion for natural history. Curtis tended to his large garden and began the publication of "The Botanical Magazine" in February of 1787. This multi-volume work became one of the most influential botanical publications, and it continues to be published today. In fact, "The Botanical Magazine" holds the record for being the longest running scientific periodical of all time.
