Description
Frederick Gordon Crosby (British, 1885-1943): 'Brooklands',
signed, charcoal and wash mixed-media on paper, depicting the 1929 Junior Car Club Double Twelve at Brooklands, 39 x 68cm, mounted, framed and glazed.
Footnotes:
The first Brooklands Double Twelve race took place on 10 and 11 May 1929. The painting depicts the action late on the second day of racing, when Ramponi's Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 (number 53) tucked into the slipstream of Davis and Gunter's 4½ Litre Bentley (number 6), to get a tow from the faster car as they overtake Lewis and Wood's Riley 9 (number 74) around the banking above the dotted safety line. This was a very close run race and after the two 12-Hour stints had finished, and the handicap was calculated, the winners were declared as Ramponi and Lurani by 0.0003 on the handicap formula over Davis and Gunter. Lurani was reportedly pleased with the win for his team-mate but disappointed that Ramponi had not allowed him to drive in either 12-Hour sessions.
