A Roman yellow-green glass oval footed dish
Probably Karanis, Egypt, circa 5th-6th Century A.D.
The rim folded outwards and over to form a broad, thickened rim, the shallow dish with a central kick and a separately attached oval foot with faint diagonal tooled decoration on the exterior, 19.5cm long

The decorative tooling on the foot of this dish is also found on the oval dishes discovered at Karanis in Fayum, Egypt, and published by D.B. Harden in 1936 (see Roman Glass from Karanis, Oxford; no.17 for a similar bowl). A collection of over 1,000 glass vessels and fragments from Karanis is now housed at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology at the University of Michigan, including several dishes akin to this lot.
