Description
TREDEGAR IRON WORKS, RICHMOND, VIRGINIA CAST-IRON GARDEN BENCH / SETTEE, the back rest and seat constructed of iron faux-wooden slats, with downswept arms terminating in scrolled grips, raised on saber-like legs terminating in feet having three mounting holes, each base end with a medial ring embossed "THE TREDEGAR CO / RICHMOND VA". Tredegar Iron Works, Richmond, VA (act. 1836-1960). 1867-1907. 32 1/2" HOA, 13 1/2" x 44 1/2" seat.
Provenance: From an important Virginia private collection.
Purchased in the Richmond, VA area.
Catalogue Note: This is the only piece of signed Tredegar garden furniture we could locate. The presence of mounting holes to each foot suggests it was made to be used in a public space.
The Tredegar firm went through many name changes over its 120+ year history with "Tredegar Co." being used between 1867 and 1907. The company produced a wide range of products including railroad car wheels and axles, locomotives, freight cars, marine and other stationary steam engines, portable steam engines, ordnance, bar iron, sawmills, pumps, shafting, Woodworth's planing machines, Noyes' planing machines, portable grist mills, gun carriages, cast steel, and hoisting engines. During the Civil War it was the biggest ironworks in the Confederate States and almost all of its production was military for the Confederate Government including artillery pieces, shells, and plate.
