LATE 18TH / EARLY 19TH CENTURY QUAKER INDIAN AFFAIRS MANUSCRIPT MATERIAL, LOT OF SEVEN, comprising four letters written to Halliday Jackson (1771-1835), Pennsylvania Quaker minister to the Indians reporting the status of the Quaker Indian schools at Tunesassa, New York dated 1805, 1806, 1813, and 1821; a two-sided endorsement of Halliday Jackson, first side "To the yearly meetings Committee on Indian Affairs at Philadelphia", 1798, second side "To the monthly meeting of friends of Newgarden", 1800; a three-page "Extracts of Indians yearly meeting held by adjournments from the 8th of the 10 mo. To the 12th of the same inclusive 1821", backed with an incomplete letter from Waynesville 28th of 1st mo. 1822 concerning the Friends purchase of about 200 acres joining the Indian reservation at Wapaghonetta for an Indian boarding school; and a "Memorandum of a Dream of a Woman Friend in Maryland, about the latter end of the winter 1799" describing a "meeting such has never been held on the continent of America", concerning the mistreatment of people of the three Nations of Indians and employing the "Children of Penn" to "stand as saviours for the People..." 1798-1822. 7 7/8" x 6 1/2" to 12 1/2" x 7 3/4".

Catalogue Note: Halliday Jackson (1771-1835) was a Quaker minister from New Garden and Darby, PA. From 1798 to 1800 he joined the Quaker Mission to the Seneca Indians organized by the Indian Committee of Philadelphia yearly Meeting. His Journal to the Seneca Indians has been reprinted on several occasions.
