Catalogue Note: The present newspaper was considered Washington's leading political newspaper. It published reports of Congressional sessions along with other daily events, as well as numerous advertisements. Alexander Hugh Holmes Stuart (1807-1891) was a Virginia lawyer and political figure, who in 1832 supported the unsuccessful Presidential campaign of Henry Clay. He served as a United States Congressman from 1841 to1843, and was the third United States Secretary of the Interior under President Millard Fillmore from 1850 to1853.
