His early works belonged to the Hudson River School direct pastoral narrative, but evolved into the more moody and shadowy Tonalism. After a stroke which paralyzed his right arm, he taught himself to paint with his left. He was part of The National Academy of Design, an honorary association of American artists founded in New York City in 1825 [taken from Wikipedia].
Signature: Lower left, it is there and somewhat visible, difficult to capture in photo, plaque on frame reads A.H. Wyant, N.A. 1836-1892, 3 labels on back including Kennedy Galleries New York and Christies, plus chalk that reads Nina 51
