Description
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND DECORATED STONEWARE JUG / PITCHER, salt-glazed, "2" gallon capacity mark, ovoid form with collared rim, double incised neck rings, beaded shoulder ring, double grooved applied strap handle, and beaded foot. Brushed cobalt alternating dropped feather and flower decoration to shoulder, dashes below spout, and double leaf design to each side, additional cobalt around handle terminals. Possibly decorated by James Madison Shinnick (1813-1881). 1850-1880. 13 1/4" HOA, 6 3/8" D rim.
Catalogue Note: This particular style of dropped flower decoration is seen in Baltimore, MD, Strasburg and Mount Crawford, VA vessels. James Shinnick was an apprentice at David Parr's pottery in Baltimore. He later moved to Strasburg before relocating to Mount Crawford, where he operated a pottery with Mathias Ireland and George Duey.
