1904 Steuben Blue Aurene Glass Vase, F. Carder
Item Details
Description
Frederick Carder (1863-1963) of Steuben Glass Works - Steuben Blue Aurene Glass Vase, ca. 1904. Inscribed "Steuben" on the underside of the foot. A stunning Steuben Blue Aurene Glass vase of an elegant form with ribbed walls as well as a beautiful iridescent blue hues on the exterior and iridescent violet hues on the interior. Aurene was developed by Frederick Carder (1863-1963) for Steuben Glass Works, one of the most respected American glass makers of the 20th century. A contemporary of Tiffany, Steuben Glass was located in Corning, New York which is in Steuben County, hence the name. This vessel showcases Carder's brilliant union of luminous hues with his Art Nouveau design aesthetic featuring classic forms with graceful lines! Size: 4.125" in diameter x 5.125" H (10.5 cm x 13 cm)

Thomas G. Hawkes persuaded the British Frederick Carder to move to Steuben County, New York in 1903 and one year later, Steuben Glass Works was established. Carder was known for his innovative exploration of various colors and glass treatments. Gold Aurene glass was among his coveted styles and led the company to thrive. However, World War I made it difficult to access important glassmaking materials, and Steuben found itself having to halt production. Given this, Hawkes sold the company to Corning Glass Works in 1918; however, Carder remained and the new Steuben division continued to produce colorful art glass. Interestingly, Tiffany Studios took Carder to court in hopes that they would be able to stop their competitor from creating works that competed with their Favrile glass. This attempt, however, was unsuccessful, because Carder had patented his technique.

Inscribed "Steuben" on the underside of the foot. Normal surface wear commensurate with age with some scuffs, abrasions, and areas of residue from former labels. Petite everted bubble and minor indentations visible on exterior walls that likely occurred when the vessel was created. Polished pontil. Overall very nice example.
