FITZGERALD WRITES TO HIS BALTIMORE SECRETARY ABOUT ZELDA.
FITZGERALD, F. SCOTT. 1896-1940. Typed Letter Signed ('Scott Fitz') mentioning Zelda's institutionalization, 1 p, 4to, Hollywood, CA, April 19, 1938, to Mrs. Allein W. Owens, Jr of Baltimore, on Garden of Allah letterhead, with penciled additions and post script, leaf toned, moderate creasing at upper and lower quadrants, mild spotting, glue remnants to verso.
In the Spring of 1938 while living at the Garden Of Allah on Sunset Blvd, Fitzgerald sent this letter to Isabel Owens, his Baltimore secretary. In part: 'I wish you would write a note to the storage company telling them that the storage is not to be opened nor anything withdrawn without specific permission from me. Explain to them that my wife has been a patient in a mental sanitarium and that any requests she may make must be referred to me. This is to prevent my books being fiven to the public library, or anything of that sort.' In pencil at the upper left corner of the page, Fitzgerald teases Mrs. Owens, who was a breeder of champion Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, about her business: 'Good luck with your four-legged fish—that's a good phrase—has any one thought of it before? / Probably have'; and again at the lower margin: 'That'd be a good ad / Mrs. Allien Owens / FOUR LEGGED FISH (and then in smaller caps) / CHESAPEAKE BAY SPANIELS (ETC).'
