Description
"England" [orig. title "A History of the English People"] by Richard John Green, with a supplementary chapter of recent events by Julian Hawthorne, Complete in Four Volumes, published by Peter Fenelon Collier, 1898; illustrated.

Hard boards, original publisher's red cloth with gold lettering on spine [a some surface wear]; stamp from John Griff Edwards on front endpaper and introduction page; 5.3/4" x 8"; 578 + 501 + 453 +531 pages, the Index at the end of 4th volume; a few illustrations in each volume, the pages next to the illustrations and endpapers are slightly foxed [see photos], very good condition.

John Richard Green (1837-1883) was an English historian. Originally, his "History of the English People" was published in London, 1874. "It is a history, not of English Kings or English Conquests, but of the English People."

Provenance:

From the library of J. Griff Edwards, Portsmouth, Virginia, the stamp is on the front endpaper and introductory page of each volume.

John Griff Edwards (1870-1912) belonged to the old established settler families in Virginia. His father and uncles served in the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War. The grandfather, LeRoy Griffin Edwards (1804-1866), was the president of the Confederate Convention of 1864. John's wife, Mrs. J. Griff Edwards founded and led the first of the United Confederate Choirs of America (1907). After that she was elected the Commander in Chief of the United Confederate Choirs. In 1911 she published a volume titled "Echoes From Dixie A Collection of Songs Used in the South."
