Description
Charles Scott autograph letter signed ("Chs. Scott B. Genl."). One page of a bifolium, 6.75" x 9.25", Phillipsborough, [New York]; September 11, 1778. Integral address sheet. Docketed. Brigadier General Charles Scott orders the apprehension of American soldiers who deserted from their regiment. Letter from Scott to Richard Secket, a captain in Colonel William Graham's Tryon County (North Carolina) Regiment of militia, in which Scott calls for the immediate apprehension of deserters. The letter reads, in full: "To Capt. Richd. Secket of Col. Graham's Regt. With the Party under your command You will immediately go in pursuit of the Deserters from your Regiment. You will use every means in your power to apprehend them, and when they are properly secur'd you will send the earliest notice to me or the commandg. Offr. of your Regiment. Given under my hand at Philip's Borough Sept. 11th. 1778." Signed, "Chs. Scott B. Genl." Charles Scott (1739-1813), born in Virginia, served in both the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. In the latter conflict, Scott rose in rank from colonel to major general. In the war, he commanded the 5th Virginia Regiment, the 4th Virginia Brigade, and the 2nd Division of the Kentucky militia. At the time of this letter, Scott was commanding an infantry unit organized by General George Washington and also serving as Washington's chief of intelligence at White Plains, New York. He was furloughed in November 1778, weeks after writing this letter. William Graham (1742-1835) was born in Virginia but later moved to North Carolina, where he served as commander of the Tryon County and Lincoln County regiments of militia in the Revolutionary War. Condition: Integral fold reinforced with archival tape. Chipping with some minor loss to blank portion of address leaf at intersections of folds. Scattered soiling.
