Description
"Doctor Zhivago" by Boris Pasternak, translated by Max Hayward and Manya Harari, includes Bernard Guilbert Guerney’s translation of "The Poems of Yurii Zhivago." Published by Pantheon, 1958. First BOMSC edition marked by the embossed dot on the backboard. Book of the Month Selection Club [BOMSC] editions were printed from the original trade edition plates and issued one month later. Pantheon issued the first trade edition of Doctor Zhivago in July 1958; the first BOMSC edition in August.

Hard boards, original dark blue cloth [very little fade and soiling]; Pasternak's signature is imprinted in gold on the front board, gold lettering on spine, ink written name [Caroline Dimple] on the front endpaper, 559 pages including poems at the end, very good condition.

In his 1958 New Yorker review, Edmund Wilson called the novel "one of the very great books of our time Doctor Zhivago will, I believe, come to stand as one of the great events in man s literary and moral history."

Due to the author's independent-minded stance on the October Revolution, "Doctor Zhivago" was refused publication in the USSR. At the instigation of Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, the manuscript was smuggled to Milan and published in 1957. Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature the following year, an event which embarrassed and enraged the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.Doctor Zhivago was made into a film by David Lean in 1965, and since then has twice been adapted for television, most recently as a miniseries for Russian TV in 2006. The novel was not allowed to appear in the Soviet Union until 1987, twenty-seven years after the author s death.

In the grand tradition of the epic novel, Boris Pasternaks masterpiece brings to life the drama and immensity of the Russian Revolution through the story of the gifted physician-poet, Zhivago; the revolutionary, Strelnikov; and Lara, the passionate woman they both love. Caught up in the great events of politics and war that eventually destroy him and millions of others, Zhivago clings to the private world of family life and love, embodied especially in the magical Lara.
