A GEORGE II MEMENTO MORI MOURNING RINGCIRCA 1756 The oval facetted rock crystal panel above an enamelled skull within a gold coloured wire surround, in a reeded closed back setting, to a black enamelled scrolled shank inscribed GULs CARPENTER OB; 3 JULIJ 1756 AE:76, the shank with makers mark CDSize/dimensions: finger size approximately OGross weight: 4.1 gramsWilliam CARPENTER (1680-1756) a maltster, the son of William CARPENTER (1661-1729) by Elizabeth KNIGHT (1664-1726). In 1706 he married Susanna PRIME (1682-1777). He had seven children: Susanna (1707-); William (1708-1782) a yeoman; Mary (1711-); Elizabeth (1713-1806); Philip (1715-1790); Margaret (1718-1796); John (1721-). At his death he is referred to as William CARPENTER senior and his burial 6th July 1756 at the church of St Mary the Virgin Adeby, Norfolk is marked by a memorial that still exists today. His will gained probate at the Court of the Diocese of Norwich, where he is referred to as William Denny CARPENTER.
Condition
There are losses to the enamelled decoration, there is nibbling to the facet edges of the rock crystal. The ring size is approximate due to the shape of the shank
