A GERMAN SILVER OVAL PLATTERJOHANN I MITTNACHT, AUGSBURG, POSSIBLY LATE 17TH CENTURYThe crimped border chased with fruit and four busts of Roman emperors in circular reserves, the centre with Apollo and his bow in hand and a companion, and the slain dragon Python at their feet 46cm (18in) long757g (24.35 oz)A similar composition of Apollo slaying the Python can be seen in engraving by Virgil Solis in the 1563 publication of Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book I, a copy of which can be seen at the Norris Museum, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, UK. Catalogue Numbers 90 and 200.
