488 漢 玉象

象以碩大玉料為材，圓雕製成，大部份受沁呈雞骨白色，邊緣微透明，區域性受沁呈黃褐色，濃淡交融，色彩古樸，穩重大氣。瑞象姿態敦實沉穩，氣勢恢弘，短腿垂腹，低首直視，嘴際長牙向前攏合，並將長鼻捲曲於一側。大耳如扇下垂，浮筋畢露，額前、臀部及腿足有數道流線，頸背、四肢以長短不一的陰刻線表現皮膚天然肌理，予人龐然大物的視覺觀感，透露貴重典雅、肅穆莊嚴神氣之態。1974年河南偃師寇店鄉李家村東漢窖藏出土，河南博物館庋藏東漢晚期〈鎏金動物－象〉造形精準，神情安然，與本品極為類似，可資參考。
動物造形是中國玉器的重要創作題材之一，不僅代表古代治玉理念中樸素的審美原則，同時也反映古代人文思想的價值取向。較早的玉象實物可追溯至距今三千多年前的殷商時期。據《呂氏春秋》記載：「商人服象，為虐於東夷。周公遂以師逐之，至於江南」。又1976 年殷墟婦好墓出土，中國社會科學院考古研究所庋藏商代晚期〈玉象〉，表明商代王室貴族早將大象用於祭祀犧牲，說明大象題材很早出現在古代玉器中。本品造形生動逼真，以簡潔的線條裝飾手法，刻劃出大象的穩重之感及安然神情，憨厚可愛。
