筆筒呈四方形，直壁，平底。採通景手法以洋彩繪青山綠水，口沿及近底處藍彩繪連續回紋，筒身繪南山秋色的自然景觀於四壁展開。山水相連，翠峰雲霧飄逸，境氣貫通，形成完整構圖。近景山石陽面填淡綠，陰面填大綠，林木蔥蘢參差，層層密密；中景山青水綠，寒江垂釣，人物概括，高古脫俗，畫面動靜相生，別有一番意趣；遠山略敷淡綠或隱或現於白雲霧靄之中，有國畫青綠山水的明豔兼淺絳山水清新之感。並於一面上方題以「南山秋色，翥山汪野亭作於珠山。」底落「平山」款。同類作品可參閱《瓷藝與畫藝－二十世紀前期的中國瓷器》中汪野亭1937 年作〈彩繪青綠山水瓷板〉，其技法、構圖及印款與本件極為相似，可資比較。整體構思相近，布局講究，繪畫筆法秀逸，設色雅致，皴擦點染無不精細入微，風格深厚蒼勁，極具工筆山水畫的怡然畫意。
「南山與秋色，氣勢兩相高。」出自唐．杜牧《長安秋望》，意指終南山崢嶸巍峨，秋色高遠遼闊，兩者競美爭勝，山之峻拔，秋之氣勢，相得益彰。汪野亭崇尚宋人山水之嚴謹，明沈周之豪放，清王石穀之清麗厚實，心儀石濤「搜盡奇峰打草稿」的創作精神，師山師水，集天然意境構思作畫。觀此筆筒藉南山秋色之景布局，以綠色彩繪展現熟練的筆法，淡雅濃豔隨類敷彩，形成墨中有色，色中透墨，交融透亮，韻味盎然，為作品平添「離凡俗、納清雅」之氣。
汪野亭，名平，字鑒，號平山、平生、老平、垂釣子，亦號傳芳居士，平山草堂主人，齋名平山草堂，江西省樂平縣人。著名繪瓷藝人，師承張曉耕、潘勾字。辛亥革命後創辦「平山草堂」畫室，致力於「淺絳山水」和「墨彩山水」的研究，並成為「珠山八友」的核心成員之一。工畫山水、花鳥，並在粉彩山水上率先運用「通景山水」技法，將完整畫面通過360 度的構圖，繪製在圓柱式器皿上，從任何角度都可看到山水相連，境氣貫通，意境萬千，達到「山水無源頭，觀者信步游」的完美效果。
