宮廷有專為其服務的宮廷畫師，是宮廷文化的重要組成部分。廣義而言，以宮廷畫家的創作為主體，除有一般的人物、山水、花鳥等題材，還包括帝王、后妃之畫作，皇家的政治紀實、軍事記事、文化娛樂等宮廷活動內容，反映皇家審美意識，是歷代傑出藝術家繪畫才智的集中體現。
宮廷繪畫出於表現紀實場景的需求和滿足皇家工整精麗的審美要求，以工筆設色寫實風格為主，至雍正、乾隆時期，清代宮廷畫家出現與前朝不同的現象。此時期有不少西方傳教士畫家來華，他們以寫實功力供奉內廷，並融入中國畫技法，使其在紀實繪畫、歷史題材繪畫、肖像繪畫，以至描寫宮苑御藏品等方面彰顯出卓越才能，深得皇帝讚賞。本冊《御製避暑山莊貯景泰藍圖稿》，其原件作品可從清宮舊藏，台北國立故宮博物院及北京故宮博物院收錄之清掐絲琺瑯或金屬胎琺瑯器作為參考。
本冊圖稿為清乾隆時期的皇家臻品，採圖像方式的寫實技法，以絹本冊頁裝訂，前有題簽條書：《御製避暑山莊貯景泰藍圖稿》，以精工彩繪避暑山莊貯藏十六件珍品，依序分別為：「掐絲琺瑯纏枝蓮紋豆式盒、畫琺瑯雷紋獸耳銜環蓋罐、掐絲琺瑯獸面紋彜、掐絲琺瑯乳丁錦紋龍耳簋式爐、鏨胎琺瑯勾雲紋牛尊、掐絲琺瑯獸面紋尊、掐絲琺瑯錦紋扁壺、掐絲琺瑯獸面紋甗、掐絲琺瑯獸面紋觥、掐絲琺瑯葫蘆紋盨式爐、畫琺瑯西洋母子圖提樑壺、畫琺瑯西洋母子圖罐、畫琺瑯皮球花提樑卣、畫琺瑯瓜楞式壺、畫琺瑯山水人物瓶、畫琺瑯山水人物爐」。整體承襲西方繪畫技巧，用圖像方式記錄避暑山莊貯藏之景泰藍，以顯千古帝王之風範。倫敦V&A 博物館庋藏清 佚名〈古玩圖〉，其形式與本品相似，可資參考。
景泰藍誕生於明清宮廷，集美術、工藝、雕刻、鑲嵌、玻璃熔煉、冶金等專業技術為一體，藝術特點可用形、紋、色、光四字概括，是皇家重要陳設的組成部分。其以典雅雄渾的造形、繁富紋樣、清麗莊重的色彩著稱，給人以圓潤堅實、細膩工整、金碧輝煌、繁花似錦的藝術感受，用圖像方式記錄，具鮮明的民族風格和深刻文化內涵。
龐萊臣（1864 － 1949），名元濟，字萊臣，號虛齋，生於浙江，是南潯巨商、「四象」之一龐雲曾（1833 － 1889）次子。其先於家鄉經營家族生意「龐滋德國藥號」和「龐恰泰醬園」，後在上海開辦「龍章造紙廠」。1918 年因組建「潯震電燈有限公司」而被譽為「浙江民族工業的開創者」。龐萊臣一生愛好收藏，每遇名跡，不惜重資購求，是20 世紀上半葉中國著名的繪畫收藏家和書畫鑑賞家。
