East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. early to mid-19th century CE. A fine pair of gilt brass menuki appliques of 2 figures in dynamic poses. One stands forward, the head tilted to the left, thick hair in loose tresses, and hands are grasping fistfuls of hair- as if in a fevered manner. The other figure faces away, a bowl in one hand and fan in the other, and both figures have fine flowing robes incised with ornate pattering and billowing folds. Menuki are petite ornaments meant to be displayed behind the cotton handle wrappings of a traditional Japanese sword, and these two are shiny and eye-catching examples!
