Description
Three (3) small Peti Clements (Alabama, 1911-1999) Black Americana folk art acrylic on board paintings depicting various scenes of everyday life in the rural south. 1st item: Painting, titled "The Water Wagon", depicting a young black girl in a red dress seated atop a barrel in a wagon, a figure in a straw hat atop a mule or horse, and an additional figure to the left with a cat in the foreground and foliate in the background. Signed "Peti Clements" lower right. Pen inscription with title, date "1981", and artist's name, en verso. Housed in carved wooden frame. Sight: 3 3/8" H x 7 " W. Framed: 5 1/2" H x 9 1/8" W. 2nd item: Painting, titled "Here Comes Santa Clause", depicting four nude children in a bed covered with a large quilt - one standing before an open window to the night sky - beside an ornamented Christmas tree with gifts strewn underneath and a toddler in striped pyjamas in the foreground. Signed "Peti Clements" lower right. Pen inscription with title, date "1982", and artist's name, en verso. Housed in a carved wooden frame. Sight: 1/2" H x 5 1/2" W. Framed: 6 1/2" H x 7 1/2" W. 3rd item: Painting depicting a group of black figures seated around a large covered table with a small child and dog beneath in the foreground and a mantlepiece with clock, photo, and quote THE LORD GIVITH [sic] in the background. Signed "Peti Clements" lower right. "Petites by Peti" sticker label, en verso. Sight: 4 5/8" H x 4 5/8" W. Framed: 6 1/2" H x 6 1/2" W. Note: Peti Clements was a female African American folk artist. She was raised on a rural Alabama farm and many of her paintings depict scenes of her early everyday life. Her work is represented in the permanent collection of the Tennessee Valley Art Museum, Tuscumbia, AL.
