Description
Two (2) Peti Clements (Alabama, 1911-1999) Black Americana folk art acrylic on canvas paintings depicting children's scenes. 1st item: Painting, titled "True in Blue", depicting two young girls with curly hair and blue dresses, one black with a white apron and one white with a bonnet over her red hair, standing shoulder-to-shoulder beside a spotted rocking horse within an indistinct, wallpapered interior. Signed "Peti Clements" lower right. Titled, dated 1983, and additionally signed, en verso of canvas. Housed in a wooden frame with metal bracket corners and gilt sight edge. Sight: 11 1/2" H x 15 1/2" W. Framed: 15 1/2" H x 19 1/2" W. 2nd item: Painting, titled "Precious Memories", depicting a still life of children's toys, including a teddy bear, letter blocks, and other items upon a brown surface; a pony and an American flag behind; and a dotted background. Signed "Peti Clements" lower right. Titled, dated 1985, and additionally signed, en verso of canvas. Housed in a wooden frame with canvas liner. Sight: 4 5/8" H x 6 5/8" W. Framed: 9 7/8" H x 11 7/8" W. Note: Peti Clements was a female African American folk artist. She was raised on a rural Alabama farm and many of her paintings depict scenes of her early everyday life. Her work is represented in the permanent collection of the Tennessee Valley Art Museum, Tuscumbia, AL.
