Description
Rembrandt Van Rin (Netherlands, 1606-1669) copperplate etching on ivory laid paper titled "The Return of the Prodigal Son" depicting the moment from the Biblical parable in which the son returns home from his travels, impoverished having wasted his inheritance, and kneels in front of his father who welcomes him with a forgiving embrace. Rendered with sharp, dark impressions and dramatic tenebrism. Signed "Rembrandt F 1636" in plate, lower center. New Hollstein's second state of three, from the Basan edition. Float mounted and housed in a giltwood frame under glass. Plate: 6 1/8" H x 5 1/4" W. Framed: 12 1/8" H x 11 3/8" W. Note: This work was purchased from the Galleria M. Arte in Padova, Italy in 2000. Copies of the certificate of authenticity and supplemental material are available to the winning bidder.
Condition
Very slight toning to perimeter of paper. Examined outside of frame, work is float mounted and corners adhered to backing.
