Item Details
Description
Coin Silver mug with unusual double marks for James Merriman of Memphis TN and Claudius Redon of New Orleans, LA. Reeded rims, angular handle, and cylindrical body engraved, "Presented.". Stamped on underside C. REDON in rectangle, surrounded by MERRIMAN and MEMPHIS in rectangles. 3 1/4"H. 3.58 oz troy. Note: Claudius Redon (1788-1857) worked in New York in 1828 and had relocated to New Orleans by 1830. He continued working there until 1851. James Merriman was born in Connecticut but had moved to Memphis by 1841. He became one of that city's most important silversmiths and retailers, working until at least 1860. Merriman was known to have imported wares from Northern makers, but this appears to be a rare instance of him retailing a piece of Southern made hollowware. Dr. Ben Caldwell, in the book TENNESSEE SILVERSMITHS, attributed this mark to the period from 1841-1847.
