Aristophanes (ca.457 - ca.385 B.C.) was the greatest exponent of the old Attic comedy and one of the first parents of modern drama. His influence on subsequent literature has been immense. Of the 43 plays we know Aristophanes wrote, only 11 remain in their entirety. These plays are not for those easily shocked by the graphic portrayal of various parts of the male anatomy, or the sort of innuendo which would have had them rolling in the aisles back in the Golden Age and, for that matter, to this day. Aristophanes' plays are regularly performed on stages all over the world.
