A THANGKA DEPICTING THE WHEEL OF LIFE, BHAVACHAKRA, 20TH CENTURY
Nepal, mid-20th century. Watercolor and gouache on linen. Depicted is the cycle of existence divided in circular sections with three animals at the center: a rooster, pig, and snake, representing passion, ignorance, and anger, surrounded by a circle symbolizing the progression and regression of man, and further surrounded by five sections of the sphere of existence and re-birth, twelve scenes representing the 'Causes of dependent origination', all emanating from the mouth of Yama. The reverse with a stamp from a Bhaktapur workshop.
Provenance: Czech private collection.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, a few loose threads, creases, and minor soiling.
