A DEHUA PORCELAIN FIGURINE OF YUE FEI, REPUBLIC PERIOD
China, 1912-1949. Consisting of two dehua porcelain figurines, depicting the military general Yue Fei kneeling with open back, and his mother, holding a staff about to tattoo his back.
Provenance: German private collection.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, the paint brush in the mother's hand lost, with minor manufacturing flaws, such as dark spots.
Weight: 390 g (the figurines)
Dimensions: Height 15.4 cm and 10.5 cm
With a matching wood base of the same period, reading Yue Fei Zhuan (The story of Yue Fei) (3).
Yue Fei was a Chinese military general who lived during the Southern Song dynasty. He is widely seen as a patriot and national folk hero and has evolved into a paragon of loyalty in Chinese culture since his death. According to legend, the mother of Yue Fei tattooed the four Chinese characters jing zhong bao guo (ç²¾å¿ æŠ¥å›½) across his back, which can be translated into 'to serve the country with the utmost loyalty'.
