Description
Oil on board of rural (Woodstock ?) landscape, 5 in. x 7 in., framed to 10 3/4 in. x 12 1/2 in., signed lower left. Harry Aitken was born in Trenton NJ in 1867 and while he is known for his pottery design he was also an acomplished painter and print maker. He was the head of the decorating department for the Onondaga Pottery Co., where he worked for over 40 years until retiring in 1946. He also took painting lessons with John F. Carlson in Woodstock, NY and with H. Leigh-Ross and Lester Stevens in Rockport, MA. His paintings were shown in shows at the Syracuse Museum of Art, Woodstock, Boston, New York and Philadelphia. In his Leisure time he was an avid fisherman and "a darned good baseball player".
