Stan Laurel 1963 TLS to his Canadian Pen Pal

Comic actor, writer, and film director Stan Laurel (1890-1965) Typed Letter Signed, “Stan Laurel”, 2pp on a bifold sheet of Oceana Apartment Hotel stationery, 5.5" x 8.5", Santa Monica, March 5, 1963. Includes original mailing envelope. Expected folds, minor toning, else near Fine condition.

In this letter to his pen pal friend, William Brown of Canada, Laurel answers a series of questions about Laurel & Hardy, even commenting,"you must be planning to write an auto-biography requesting all this material & details?"

Laurel’s letter, with original spelling unchanged, first refers to a photo taken when Laurel & Hardy were visiting the White House with Eleanor Roosevelt. He then continues, "I have'nt seen Billy Gilbert or Walter King making any guest appearances during the last year or so, the last I saw of King he was doing a commercial for Carter's Little Pills, that was quite sometime ago. Re Wallace Beery in Mexico City, I was'nt WITH him, he was among the group of invited guests, do'nt think I even talked with him. I did see a Bullfight down there - did'nt appeal to me at all, would'nt interest me to see another. / I do'nt know of any L&H Fan Club in Canada or anywhere else in fact."

Laurel then answers several questions, "Story of 'Pants on Philip' - Hardy meets a relative from Scotland, he is wearing Kilt, Hardy gets embarrassed, so takes Philip to his tailor to fit him for pants. The very first film I made with Hardy was 'Lucky Dog' for Broncho Billy Anderson…'Pick a Star' was not a L&H film, we made a guest appearance in it -couple of routines…Skinned alive was a gag in 'The Bullfighter' (20th. Fox Studio)…No I did'nt originate finger wiggle, but was the first time used on the screen I guess…Yes, I was Chaplin's understudy till he went into films…Hardy & I were never in the armed forces - did you want to lose the War?!!”
