Superb CDV of Baseball Player During Civil War
Uncommon Carte De Visite, 2.5" x 4.125", Baltimore, MD, likely of a baseball player during the Civil War dressed in full uniform and pictures with a star on the front of his shirt. With "The Broadway Photographic Art Studio" stamp on verso. Evidence of mounting, and dealers notes on verso, slight toning and foxing, not affecting the photo.
At the start of the American Civil War in the spring of 1861, baseball was a national sport, though it remained most popular in northeastern cities such as New York, Brooklyn, Philadelphia and Boston. Civil War veterans have left us accounts of playing baseball in various sources, including letters, diaries, newspapers, memoirs and regimental histories. These accounts indicate that northern troops played the sport more often than their Confederate counterparts.
