Description
Hope: a stipple engraved goblet by Simon Whistler, executed in 2000
The straight-sided bucket bowl engraved with a view of the interior of the Anglo-Saxon Rood set against the interior of Romsey Abbey, the crucifixion with Christ radiating light on the cross, flanked by silhouettes of St. Mary and St. John, flanked by columns beneath a vaulted ceiling, on a plain stem and circular foot, 15.9cm high
Footnotes:
This goblet was a special commission for Philip Lloyd and intended to portray the notion of 'Hope' springing eternal in the human breast, conveyed through a view of a religious building. The Saxon 'Rood' or Crucifix in Romsey Abbey is a great treasure carved on a stone tablet once encrusted with jewels. Set into the Norman stonework of St. Anne's Chapel, it occupies a central position in the apse immediately behind the altar in the south aisle. The goblet is not recorded in Simon Whistler's catalogue, On a Glass Lightly (2004).
