MAROZZO (ACHILLE)
Opera nova... de l'arte de l'armi, title within elaborate woodcut border depicting knights in armour, numerous woodcut illlustrations (many full-page), with blank R4, title-page slightly shaved at foot just touching border, one blank corner torn away from P8, old piece of paper pasted to blank verso of Q7, early blind-stamped pigskin over boards, worn with minor loss at spine ends and corners, preserved in purpose-made solander box [cf.Thimm, p.181; Vigeant, pp.89-90; not in Adams], 4to (210 x 158mm.), [Modena, 1540]

Rare early edition of an early systematic treatise on fencing, and other modes of armed combat (dagger, pike, two-handed sword, etc.) richly illustrated with fine Renaissance woodcut illustrations.
Provenance: Early ownership inscription (1561) on front free endpaper; small unidentified circular ink stamp on title.
