Description
Oil on canvas, measurements: 45 x 59 cm. Lievens (Leiden, October 24, 1607 – Amsterdam, June 4, 1674); Dutch painter. In his youth he studied with Pieter Lastman. After several years as a trainee, he began his career as a freelance artist at the age of twelve. He collaborated and shared a studio with Rembrandt in the 1620s. He painted pictures in larger formats than Rembrandt, although he is judged to be less expressive. Despite the difference in quality, various works by Lievens have often been mistaken for Rembrandt. He divided his life between Antwerp and England, where he was between 1632 and 1644. During his stay in England he made a portrait of Thomas Howard, and was influenced by the work of Anthony van Dyck. He suffered significant financial difficulties, so upon his death, his family avoided claiming any inheritance for fear of debt. One of his most peculiar paintings, Susanna and the Elders, is considered lost, although it is known from an engraving by Jan van Vliet. The only known painting by Lievens in Spain is a Landscape with rest on the flight to Egypt, in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid.
