Great Western Railway Conductor's Lantern
Item Details
Description
Canadian. 1870s. Rare. Nickel plated brass frame, glass globe. Features two-colour green and clear globe cut, "GWR Conductor". Lanterns that feature this rare fused glass globe are often thought to have been used by Conductors as the lower clear section would allow a clean light for which to check tickets. The fact that this particular example is cut with script indicates that it may have been a presentation lantern to the Conductor from fellow employees or the railway. Stamped, "Parmelee & Bonnell, Buffalo, N.Y." and engraved with a museum inventory number. The lantern was sourced from an American maker as there weren't any Canadian railway lantern makers during this early period in Canadian railway history. From the Joe Byway Collection. 11.5 H x 8 W x 8" D.
