North America, United States, New York, ca. 1907. BAL 11906; Sisson & Martens, p.38. A remarkable first edition of "The Road," written by Jack London (American, 1876 to 1916) and published by The MacMillan Company in 1907. Consisting of 224 pages with a gilt top edge, this autobiographical memoir details London's experiences as a drifter in the 1890s, describing his life hopping freight trains and begging for food and money during the worst economic depression the United States had experienced up to that time. It also includes London's account of being arrested for vagrancy and spending 30 days in Erie County Penitentiary. The book contains 48 illustrations, comprised of both plates and photographs, and is embellished by an original gray cloth cover stamped in black with gilt lettering on the spine and front cover. Size: 6" L x 1.3" W x 8.3" H (15.2 cm x 3.3 cm x 21.1 cm)
Born John Griffith Chaney, Jack London was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist who became one of the first American authors to gain international celebrity status. Considered an innovator of science fiction, London was a passionate advocate of unionization, workers' rights, and socialism. He is most famous for writing "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang," both set in the Klondike Gold Rush which London joined at the age of 21 in 1897.

Condition
Very good condition without dust jacket. Cover has light fraying and bending to corners and peripheries. Fraying to a few pages on long edge. Loosening to binding. Some staining and marks on cover and to a few pages. Stamp from previous owner on interior of front cover.
