A soldier. Unsigned. Inscribed “Troupe Auxiliare Halvetique” with illegible French in period script verso.
Pen and ink on cream laid paper, 4.5” x 5” (113mm x 128mm). Matted 20” x 16”.
Notes:
The Helvetii were a tribe of the Celtae who fought in the Gallic Wars that took place between 58 BC and 50 BC. The wars, between then Roman general Julius Caesar and the people of Gaul, earned Caesar the reputation as a formidable and ruthless military leader. Gaul encompassed present-day France and Belgium, along with parts of Germany.
