Item Details
Description
South Carolina Currency
June 1, 1775 South Carolina Provincial Congress Large Format 50 Pounds Note PMG graded Very Good-8
South Carolina Provincial Congress. June 1, 1775. 50 Pounds. "Woman frightened by a storm taking refuge by a tree" vignette, PMG graded Very Good-8.
Fr. SC-101. This ornately designed Provincial Congress issued note is printed on both sides. This cataloger believes it is almost certain to be cut out from this holder, or sent for "re-grade," as it clearly appears higher quality than VG-8, and more towards Fine with detail of Very Fine as shown. It displays an ornate large vignette at the lower right of a "Woman who is frightened by a storm sitting next to a tree" with the motto: POST TENEBRAS LUX (After the darkness, light) encircling, the date "1775" printed at bottom. The back side displays large calligraphic designs of flourishes and a banner reading "FOR THE PUBLICK GOOD". Its PMG holder states large splits and tape repairs, which is partially correct as a splitting vertical centerfold is reinforced with several stamp hinges (easily removable) on the reverse. Overall, printing on both sides is sharp and clear on both sides. All five signatures are penned in brown ink and clearly readable including; Thomas Corbett, John Edwards, William Parker, John Neufville and Peter Bacot. This note is too harshly graded by PMG being above average for the series and for this scarce highest denomination with all signatures present. An impressively designed early American Revolutionary War period Large Format 50 note being the highest denomination on its issue of only 6,000 issued.
