1697 Death Announcement of Georges d'Aubusson de La Feuillade Archbishop of Embrun & Bishop of Metz, France
1697-Dated, Typeset Printed Death Announcement of Georges d'Aubusson de La Feuillade (1609-1697), the Archbishop of Embrun and Bishop of Metz, France, Very Fine.
This original 1697 boldly printed death announcement measures about 2.5" x 3-7/8" and has a black, decorative mourning border around all sides. Georges d'Aubusson de La Feuillade, like most French Catholics during the 1600's, was an ardent anti-Protestant, particularly in reference to the Huguenots, whose population declined precipitously in France by the time of his death. This official, decoratively typeset designed Death notice is in great condition and is decidedly rare.
Georges d'Aubusson de La Feuillade (1609 to 1697) was a French Roman Catholic clergyman under Louis XIV, who served as Archbishop of Embrun (1649-1668), then Bishop of Metz, France (1669-1697). He also held a number of diplomatic posts and actively supported measures against French Huguenots; he died in May 1697 and was buried in Metz Cathedral.
