**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast of Mexico, Veracruz, Remojadas, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A hand-built head fragment, originally part of a larger figure with a naturalistic visage slipped in a warm buff hue highlighted by black bitumen pigment. This hollow cranium is adorned with a headdress and earspools, the visage is excellent and well preserved - eye sockets with delineated lids over the slightly recessed eyes, a life-like nose and flared nostrils, and upturned lips that reveal blackened teeth. The mouth is open, a slit leading into the hollow interior, acting as a vent hole, and creating a trance like expression. Size: 4.5" L x 3.5" W x 6" H (11.4 cm x 8.9 cm x 15.2 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

Condition
Fragment of a larger piece as shown, loss to right ear, and perforation on headdress. Chipping and losses to slip layers on nose, chin, and brow. Nice manganese deposits on verso and remains of bitumen pigment.
