La tavola è attribuita a Peter van de Velde (Anversa, 1634-1707) celebre pittore specializzato in vedute marine con vascelli. Nel 1654 è documentata la sua registrazione alla Gilda di San Luca di Anversa. La critica, però, vista la longevità dell'artista, sospetta che ci sia stato un errore anagrafico e che pittori a nome Peter van de Velde fossero padre e figlio ed entrambi nella medesima bottega. Infatti, alcune opere recentemente scoperte portano date successive al 1707 arrivando sino al 1723 (cfr. asta Christie's, London South Kensington, 10 luglio 2009, lotto 143 secondo il catalogo datato 1722 e un dipinto all'asta di Anversa, Bernaerts, lotto 15/17 maggio 2006, è datato 1723).
