Description
Fred Taylor (1875-1963)
VISIT INDIA LAND OF SUNSHINE & COLOUR
lithographic poster in colours, c.1928, printed by Adams Bros. & Shardlow Ltd., London, backed on linen
40 x 50in. (100 x 125cm.)
Footnotes:
Benares (Varanasi) and the Ganges, depicted from a viewpoint over Manikarnika Ghat. The temples shown are, from left to right, Baba Mashan Nath on the lower level; Tarkeshwar and Ratneshawar on the upper level; Tripur Sundari, and Ganesh.
Fred Taylor (1875-1963) was a popular poster designer, especially between 1908 and the 1940s, and is highly regarded today as among the leading names in poster design. Best known for his London Underground and Transport posters, he also designed for the Empire Marketing Board and became a camouflage artist during the Second World War. This poster is very scarce, and we have traced only one other 'Visit India' poster by Taylor, featuring the Golden Temple at Amritsar. Here, he employs an impressionistic style, to capture the time-honoured activity at the revered Ganges riverside.
