Biography from the archives of AskArt: Bill Hutson was born September 6, 1936 in San Marcos, Texas. Hutson is essentially a self-taught artist, educator and amateur archivist who has traveled extensively for exhibitions, work and research. Hutson has lived in England, France, Holland, Italy, Nigeria and Senegal. He has visited every country in western Europe, and traveled to Cambodia, Canada, Gabon, India, Ivory Coast, Laos, Mali, Mauritania, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar (Burma),Thailand, Turkey, Yugoslavia, Venezuela and Vietnam. During the past thirty years solo exhibitions of work Hutson completed has been seen in more than 20 museums and galleries, and in over 50 group exhibitions. Art made by Bill Hutson---abstract paintings and painted objects---is in private and several public collections including The Schomburg Center For Research in Black Culture, The Brandywine Graphic Workshop,The Arco Collection, The Columbus Museum of Art, The Studio Museum in Harlem, The James E. Lewis Museum, The Newark Museum, The Boysmana-Van Beuningen Museum, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and The National Museum of Southern Australia. Hutson has received awards including the Cassandra Foundation Award and a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship. He has been a guest speaker and educator in numerous institutions including The University of Paris-Sorbonne Nouvelle, École Nationale d'Art et Manufacture, Libreville, Gabon, Hunter College City University of New York, The Detroit Institute of Arts, Maryland Institute College of Art, The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore Maryland, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, and The National Museum of Art in Lagos, Nigeria. Bibliography focused on Hutson can be found in publications including 'The Artist Portrait Series', by Fern Logan and mentions in catalogs and reviews including, ARTnews, The New York Times, The Columbus Dispatch, Artspeak, H.R. Wilson's Art Index and L'Express.
