Raffald (Elizabeth) The experienced English house-keeper, for the use and ease of ladies, house-keepers, cooks, &c. Wrote purely from practice, first edition, signed by the author at head of A1, as usual (for copyright reasons), 2 folding engraved bills of fare, these creased, water-stained, spotted, lightly browned, contemporary sheep, rebacked, preserving original gilt backstrip in compartments (worn at ends), corners restored, little stained, [Bitting p.387 (note); Cagle 944; Maclean pp.121-124; Oxford pp.98-99; Simon BG 1249], 8vo, Manchester, Printed by J. Harrop, for the author, and sold by Messrs. Fletcher and Anderson, in St. Paul's Church-Yard, London; and by Eliz. Raffald, Confectioner, near the Exchange, Manchester, 1769.

⁂ Mrs. Raffald spent fifteen years as housekeeper to Lady Elizabeth Warburton (to whom the work is dedicated), married the gardener, opened a confectioner's shop in Manchester and set up a cookery school. She went on to have fifteen daughters, run two inns, found Salford's first newspaper, establish a registry office for servants and compile Manchester's first Directory.
