Description
Italian Painter, 18/19th Century, Jupiter and Io. The painting is a detail copy of the well-known composition by the Emilian painter Correggio, belonging to the series of canvases with the Loves of Jupiter that was commissioned by Duke Federico II Gonzaga, and later sold at the beginning of the seventeenth century to Rudolf II of Prague. There are many copies and derivations from Correggio's original that contributed greatly to the diffusion of this subject. The nymph Io is represented from the back in an erotic attitude as she abandons herself in the arms of Jupiter, who has transformed into a soft and ethereal pearly cloud to seduce her. In fact, in the cloud we can see a human face that delicately kisses the nymph. Oil on canvas, 39 x 29 cm
