Description
Fine Burmese Shan Talismanic Undergarments Yantra, Early 20th C. Worn for protection, created by Buddhist monks or shaman who would write/draw the yantra on the cloth. They were usually made using a stylus with black ink made from soot and animal bile. The drawings on such textiles most often consisted of images of Buddha, nats (many pictured on this cloth), diagrams with magic numbers and letters, incantations and magic spells. It was believed that the physical and mental characteristics of animals were transferred from the drawings to the person wearing the garment. Size: 21'' x 60'', 53 x 152 cm (shirt); 43'' x 36'', 109 x 91 cm (pants).
