Description
Aymara Men's Ceremonial Poncho, Late 19th/20th C. Three narrow bands of lluqui (reverse spin yarns) appear at the edge of each side. Lluq'i or left (sinister) spun yarns, when just yarns, are thought to have magical properties and such yarns are used in spell casting. When woven into a textile the tension of the opposite spinning and plying to the more common right provokes the textile to lie flat and is quite common in Aymara weaving of both male and female garments. The rust color ground is probably dyed from a cactus flower called ayrampu; with striking dark teal fringe. Size: 38'' x 42.5'', 97 x 108 cm.
