Charles Frederick Naegele (American, Tennessee/New York/Georgia 1857-1944), " World War One Soldier", oil on canvas three-quarter portrait depicting a soldier, likely of the Army 141st Ambulance Company, 36th Infantry Division, with "Rooster" patch and three Wound Chevrons, set in a battlefield, signed lower right, in period giltwood frame. Note: Naegele was a noted American portrait painter whose works was famously exhibited at the Salmagundi Club (New York, founded 1871). Naegele's work was influenced by that of his notable teachers, William Merritt Chase (American, 1849-1916) and William Sartain (American, 1843-1924). Canvas approx. h. 40", w. 30"; Overall h. 50", w. 40".
Condition
Surface is dirty with scattered losses, two small patches en verso lower left center, some inpainting to lower section of canvas, chips to frame with darkening to gilding.
