Description
Solomon Island War Club, 19th C. Ovoid leaf-shaped blade curving into the long narrow handle of flattened elliptical cross section. The butt end of the club is a differentiated triangle carved into a point. This handle device acts as both a return for better gripping as well as a thrusting spear point function. A raised medial strip runs the full length of the leaf/blade portion. The dark brown surface is finished with a layer of vigorous coral or stone rasp tool marks and the underlying shaping was done with short strokes of most likely a dull steel tool. There are no cracks or chips on the club. Provenance: Old Honolulu Collection; Stephen Meder; IMEPA Collection #6:A.16. Size: 44.75'' x 5'' x 1'' (114 x 13 x 3 cm).
