In essa il grande scienziato combatté la dottrina della preformazione dell'embrione, all'epoca correntemente accettata, e stabilì l'eguale influenza del padre e della madre nell'ereditarietà, facendosi al contempo difensore della teoria epigenetica per cui le cellule embrionali si differenziano in successivi stadi di sviluppo. Non pochi, nell'opera, le straordinarie teorie solo successivamente sviluppate da Darwin e da Mendel. The valuable and famous work of Maupertuis paved the way for modern genetics and embryology with original research on the origin and generation of the human species. In it the great scientist fought the doctrine of preformation of the embryo, currently accepted at the time, and established the equal influence of father and mother in heredity, while defending the epigenetic theory that embryonic cells differ in subsequent stages of development.
